The civic transport body is planning to get buses that operate on electricity as a part of its Eco-friendly initiative. Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has already submitted a proposal to acquire 12 electric buses, each estimated to cost up to Rs 2.5 crore, under Center’s FAME India Scheme .
A civic official said that FAME India is part of central government’s National Electric Mobility Mission Plan initiative, wherein incentives are provided for purchase of hybrid or electric vehicles.
“Zero emission technologies is the need of the hour and having electric buses is a step towards achieving it. Demand for 12 buses has already been put up with the Center,“ said additional municipal commissioner Ankush Chavan.
“Of the total cost, Rs 1.5 cro re will be compensated through the scheme. The remaining sum will have to be raised by the transport body for which the ge neral body’s approval has to be taken,“ said an NMMT official.
