The union cabinet on Thursday approved a mammoth project to upgrade and expand Mumbai’s suburban rail network over the next five years.
The MUTP 3A is a bouquet of 12 rail projects that could cost an estimated 33,690 crore, and may be the most ambitious programme to expand the city’s transport infrastructure.
These projects include buying air conditioned rakes for the sub urban railway network; setting up communication based train control on central harbour and Western Railways;building more railway lines from Borivli to Virar (5th and 6ht) , and Kalyan to Badlapur (3rd and 4th) ;extending Harbour line from Goregaon to Borivli station;Laying a new line from Kalyan to Asangaon;improving stations and technical assistance , among other things.
THe cost of all 12MUTP 3A project was estimated at RS 54777 crore. However , two projects an elevated corridor from CSMT to Panvel and a suburban corridor from Vashi to Virarhave been put on hold.
