Panvel ST depot to get Rs 230 crore makeover

The MSRTC plans to shut down the Panvel bus depot for two years in order to undertake renovations there. In the meanwhile , services will operate from the nearby bus depot at Panvel Railway station. The renovation of Panvel depot has been pending for a long time and MSRTC deadlines for the project have been postponed more than once.

Officials are set to visit the bus depot this week and set a deadline for its closure. The 67 year old bus depot has been in a run down condition for the past seven years will get a face lift estimated to cost 230 crore.

MSRTC will take up the renovation work and develop the ST depot , transforming into a modern depot. Panvel depot is one of the 13 such bus depot which are set to get face lift.

The local passengers body is however not convinced that MSRTC plan for revamp is sound one. Presently commuters are forced to wait in sun as only a part of the depot is covered by shade. There will also be more toilets and commuters will no longer have to visit the nearby mall to use the facilities.

The old Mumbai Pune highway run past the current bus depot making it easier for travellers from neighboring areas. The highway does not face much congestion and is well connected to the city.
