Six months after the century old Delisle bridge in Lower Parel was shut for traffic , WR floated tenders for the construction of the new bridge , whose work is expected to be completed in 12 months. Delise bridge a key connector in south Mumbai was closed on July 24 after a safety audit led by IIT Bombay termed it unsafe. Demolition work began on August 20 and it is expected to continue till February 15. WR is planning a major block in February to remove the pillars of the bridge. During this period , both local and long distance train services will be affected .
The new bridge will cross over the five existing railway lines with provision to accommodate the proposed sixth line between Mumbai Central and Borivali . The 267 meter wide bridge will also have 2 meter wide pavement on either side of carriage way.
Delisle bridge was effectively the only pathway to the Lower Parel commuters from eastern suburbs and was used by pedestrian to cross from Lower Parel east to west and vice versa. An estimated 1200 vehicles used the bridge every hour.
